A brief history of Balvaird Castle

Balvaird Castle was built around 1500 by Sir Andrew Murray. Sir Andrew married Margaret Barclay, heiress to the Balvaird lands, which enabled him to erect this impressive residence. The name "Balvaird" comes from Gaelic and means "the bard's town", which adds extra charm and mystery to the place.

The Murray family were an influential clan in Scotland, and Balvaird Castle served as their main seat for several generations. In the 17th century the family moved their principal residence to Scone Palace, and Balvaird gradually declined in importance, although it remained in their possession.
