Scottish Castles – Discovering Lauriston Castle

During my most recent visit to Edinburgh I decided to visit one of the lesser-known but incredibly charming places – Lauriston Castle. Situated on the outskirts of the city, this castle is a true gem that combines rich history with beautiful architecture and picturesque gardens.

A Brief History of Lauriston Castle

Originally, on the site of today's castle in the 16th century there stood a residential tower belonging to Sir Archibald Napier. Over the following centuries the castle passed through the hands of various owners, who gradually expanded and modernised the building. In 1827 architect William Burn carried out a significant reconstruction in the Scottish revival style, giving the castle the appearance we admire today.

The most important phase in the history of Lauriston Castle began in 1902, when the castle was purchased by William and Margaret Reid. The Reids were wealthy collectors of art and antiques. Thanks to their passion the castle's interiors were filled with valuable furniture, paintings and decorative items from various periods.

After Margaret Reid's death in 1926, in accordance with her wishes, the castle together with all its furnishings was handed over to the city of Edinburgh. The condition of the donation was that the interiors be preserved unchanged so that future generations could admire their beauty.

Castle interiors

Visiting Lauriston Castle, I felt as if I had stepped back in time. The castle's interiors have retained the authentic character of the early 20th century. Here you can see:

  • Library z bogatym księgozbiorem i wygodnymi skórzanymi fotelami.
  • Dining room z okazałym stołem i zastawą z epoki.
  • Bedrooms wyposażone w oryginalne meble i tekstylia.
  • Drawing room z kolekcją porcelany i dzieł sztuki.

Guides tell fascinating stories about the lives of the Reid family and about the various exhibits in the castle.

Gardens and grounds

One of Lauriston Castle's greatest assets is its gardens. I was particularly captivated by Japanese garden, created in 2002 in collaboration with Japanese landscape architects. Walking through it, you can feel the peace and harmony characteristic of East Asian gardens.

In addition, the castle grounds offer wonderful views of the Firth of Forth. It's an ideal spot for a picnic or a relaxing walk among the greenery.

Why visit Lauriston Castle?

  • Authenticity: The castle has retained its original early 20th-century interiors, making it a living museum.
  • Intimacy: The site is not as crowded as other Edinburgh attractions, so you can enjoy its charm in peace.
  • Beautiful gardens: Both the traditional garden and the Japanese garden are excellent places to relax and admire nature.
  • Cultural events: The castle regularly hosts workshops, demonstrations and themed events for children and adults.

Practical information

Lauriston Castle is located about 5 kilometres northwest of Edinburgh city centre. Public transport access is straightforward, and there is parking on site for motorists. It's worth checking opening hours and ticket prices on the castle's official website or at local tourist information points.

My impressions

Visiting Lauriston Castle was extremely inspiring for me. It's a place where history meets the beauty of nature, and every detail tells its own story. If you're planning a visit to Edinburgh and want to see something beyond the usual tourist attractions, I highly recommend Lauriston Castle. It's a true treasure that will surely leave you with unforgettable memories.
