Castles of Scotland - Dunvegan Castle

Dunvegan Castle is located on the Isle of Skye in western Scotland. The castle has been the seat of the MacLeod clan for over 800 years and is one of the oldest castles in Scotland still held by the same family.

The history of Dunvegan Castle dates back to the 13th century, when the ruler of the Isle of Skye, Magnus Olafson, built a wooden fortress on a hill above Loch Dunvegan. Later, in the 14th century, the castle was replaced by a stone-and-wood fortress, and then in the 15th century by a masonry tower.

In the 17th century, on the site of the earlier fortification, the present castle was built. The castle consists of several buildings joined together that were expanded over the centuries. Inside the castle are numerous rooms, including richly decorated halls, bedrooms, kitchens and a library that houses valuable manuscripts and documents related to the history of the MacLeod clan.

It is also worth visiting the castle garden, which contains rare plants, including endemics — species that occur only on the Isle of Skye. In one of the lakes on the castle grounds live sea swans, which are a symbol of the MacLeod clan.

Dunvegan Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Isle of Skye and in Scotland. It offers not only a rich history and architecture, but also beautiful views of the surrounding area and a wealth of wildlife and plant life.
