Scottish Castles - Redhouse Castle

Redhouse Castle (Redhouse Castle) is a baronial-style castle located near the town of Dalkeith, about 13 kilometres southeast of Edinburgh. The castle was originally a tower house, built in the 14th century, and was later extended with additional wings in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The history of Redhouse Castle is rich and connected to many figures from Scottish history. In the 15th century the castle belonged to the Gourlay family, and in the 17th century it became the property of the Foulis family. In the 18th century the castle was sold to the Wauchope family, who carried out its expansion and modernisation.

During World War II the castle was used as a military base and training centre, and after the war it was taken over by the Edinburgh city authorities. In the 1960s the castle was sold to a private family, who carried out an extensive renovation and restored the castle to its former glory.

Today Redhouse Castle is a private residence and is not open to visitors, but it can be seen from the outside and admired for its picturesque setting. The castle is considered one of the most beautiful places in Scotland and is often used as a setting for films and photo shoots.
