Castles of Scotland - Kilchurn Castle

Kilchurn Castle is a historic castle located in the western part of Scotland, on the shore of Loch Awe. Kilchurn Castle was built in the 15th century by Sir Colin Campbell, one of the barons of Argyll. The castle initially served as the seat of the Campbell clan, who at that time were one of the most powerful clans in Scotland.

Kilchurn Castle was built on an artificial island connected to the shore by a bridge. The castle consisted of a tower house, an outbuilding, a chapel and other smaller buildings. The castle was expanded in the 17th century, and its defensive walls were reinforced to better protect it from attacks.

In the 18th century, when the Campbell clan moved their seat to Inveraray, Kilchurn Castle was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. In the 19th century the castle was bought by a private owner who carried out restoration work and made many photographs and drawings, helping the castle become one of Scotland's most recognizable landmarks.

Today Kilchurn Castle is open to visitors and is a popular tourist attraction. On the castle grounds visitors can explore the remains of the tower house, the defensive walls and the chapel. The castle also offers magnificent views of Loch Awe and the surrounding mountains.

Kilchurn Castle is not only a beautiful monument but also a place rich in history and tradition. The castle played an important role in the struggles for Scotland's independence, and at that time it was one of the most important castles in Scotland.

  1. "Highlander" - kultowy film z 1986 roku, w reżyserii Russella Mulcahy'ego, w którym Christopher Lambert wciela się w postać Connor MacLeoda. Zamek Kilchurn został wykorzystany jako plener do scen kręconych na zamkowych murach i w piwnicach.
  2. "Do Rycerzy, do Szlachty, do Mieszczan" - film z 1995 roku, w reżyserii Jana Jakuba Kolskiego, opowiadający historię kilku polskich rycerzy wyjeżdżających na wyprawę do Szkocji. Zamek Kilchurn służył jako plener do scen w zamku, w którym toczy się akcja filmu.
  3. "The 39 Steps" - film z 1959 roku, w reżyserii Ralpha Thomasa, oparty na powieści Johna Buchana.

Zamek ten, dzięki swojej malowniczej lokalizacji i urokliwej architekturze, stanowi doskonałe miejsce do kręcenia filmów historycznych i przygodowych.
