Castles of Scotland - Midhope Castle

Midhope Castle, also known as Midhope Castle, is a picturesque ruin located in Scotland, near the village of Abercorn on the Hopetoun House estate, a few miles west of Edinburgh. It is a historic building that dates from the early 17th century, although its history may go back even further.

Architecturally, Midhope Castle is an example of the typical Scottish "tower house". Buildings of this type were popular in Scotland during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The castle consists of a four-storey stone tower, with features characteristic of the period such as narrow arrow-slit windows and thick walls.

Over the years Midhope has gone through various fortunes. It was originally the home of the Martin family, later passed into the hands of the Drummond family, and finally became part of the estate of the Earls of Hopetoun. Over time the castle was abandoned and fell into ruin, but it has retained its charm and is a popular place to visit, especially after it was used as a filming location in the popular television series "Outlander", where it served as Lallybroch, the family home of the main character Jamie Fraser.

Today Midhope Castle is open to visitors, although its interior is closed to the public due to its ruined state. Its charming location and rich history make it an interesting destination for lovers of history, architecture, and fans of popular culture.
