Later, in 1505, the partly ruined castle passed into the hands of Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly, who, by order of King James IV, restored it for use by a royal garrison. In 1645 the castle played a key role during the second Battle of Inverlochy, where the Royalists under James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose, won a victory over the Covenanter forces.

Today Old Inverlochy Castle attracts history enthusiasts and tourists, offering insight into medieval Scotland. Its sturdy, quadrangular construction with towers at the corners still impresses, and its location at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the British Isles, only adds to its charm.
