Castles of Scotland - Old Inverlochy Castle

Old Inverlochy Castle, set in the picturesque surroundings of Fort William, is one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Scotland, whose walls conceal a fascinating history dating back to the 13th century. Built around 1270–1280 by John 'the Black' Comyn, Lord of Badenoch and Lochaber, and chief of the powerful Comyn clan, the castle was not only a fortress but also a symbol of authority in the Lochaber region.

The origins of Old Inverlochy Castle may go even further back, perhaps to Pictish times, as the historian Hector Boece suggests, mentioning a 'town' destroyed by the Vikings. With Robert Bruce's accession to the throne in 1306, the Comyns, his main rivals, were stripped of their influence, and the castle stood empty for a time.

In 1431 the first Battle of Inverlochy was fought near the castle, where the clan of Alexander MacDonald, Lord of the Isles, defeated the army of King James I. Later, in 1505, the partly ruined castle passed into the hands of Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly, who, by order of King James IV, restored it for use by a royal garrison. In 1645 the castle played a key role during the second Battle of Inverlochy, where the Royalists under James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose, won a victory over the Covenanter forces.

Today Old Inverlochy Castle attracts history enthusiasts and tourists, offering insight into medieval Scotland. Its sturdy, quadrangular construction with towers at the corners still impresses, and its location at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the British Isles, only adds to its charm.

Old Inverlochy Castle is not just a monument but also a place that tells the story of power struggles, clan conflicts, and Scotland's changing fortunes. A walk along its walls is a journey through time that lets you feel the spirit of bygone centuries. Combined with the luxurious Inverlochy Castle Hotel and breathtaking views, a visit to this place is a must for anyone wanting to discover the real Scotland.

If you are planning a trip to Fort William, don't miss this historic gem. Old Inverlochy Castle is waiting to tell you its story!
