Castles of Scotland - Crichton Castle

Crichton Castle, picturesquely located in the valley of the River Tyne in Scotland, is one of the most fascinating medieval castles, with a history dating back to the 14th century. Once a powerful fortress and the seat of influential families, the castle today remains an important historic site, attracting history and architecture enthusiasts from around the world.

History of Crichton Castle

The oldest part of the castle, located in its central section, was built at the end of the 14th century by Sir John de Crichton. It was a massive residential-defensive tower intended not only for defence but also to provide comfort for its inhabitants. The tower had three storeys and measured about 25 metres high. It was accessed through two arched entrances in the north wall.

Around the tower were service buildings, including a rectangular structure measuring 20 by 9 metres that contained a well. Over the years the castle was expanded, particularly by the son of John de Crichton, Sir William Crichton, who became Chancellor of Scotland in 1439. He rebuilt the castle, creating an impressive complex of buildings around a small courtyard.

Castle Architecture

The centre of the new castle was the south wing with the Great Hall, which was an impressive room measuring 10.2 by 6 metres. The interior of the castle was well lit by large windows, and a decorated fireplace stood in the west wall. The north wing, rebuilt by Sir Francis Stewart in the 16th century, became one of the most interesting features of the castle, containing, among other things, a seven-arched loggia and a 'diamond' façade.

Legends and Mysteries of the Castle

Crichton Castle, like many Scottish castles, is shrouded in numerous legends. One of the best-known tales concerns the spirit of the White Lady, who is said to appear at night within the castle walls. The legend says she is the ghost of a young woman who was unjustly accused of treason and sentenced to death. Her restless soul still haunts the castle, seeking justice.

Another story tells of mysterious tunnels beneath the castle that were said to lead to hidden treasures. Although no treasures were ever found, the searches continue to this day, and the legend still attracts adventurers.

Decline and Restoration of the Castle

In the 17th century Crichton Castle gradually lost its importance and fell into ruin. In the 19th century the castle passed into private hands and was later handed over to state care. Today the castle is in the care of Historic Scotland, an organization responsible for protecting Scotland's cultural heritage. Thanks to their efforts, Crichton Castle has been partially restored and is open to visitors.

The Castle's Cultural Significance

Crichton Castle not only played an important role in Scotland's history but also became an inspiration for many works of literature and film. Its majestic ruins and dark atmosphere make it an ideal setting for stories about knights, ghosts, and medieval intrigues.
