History of Dunnottar Castle

Early History

The first fortifications on the site of the present castle already existed in Pictish times, probably in the 4th or 5th century. The first written mentions of Dunnottar date from the time of St. Ninian, who founded a church there in the 5th century.

Middle Ages

The present structure of the castle was built mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries, although some parts may date from earlier times. Dunnottar witnessed many important historical events. In 1297, William Wallace captured the castle, burning it to rid it of the English garrison.

Early Modern Period

The most significant period in the castle's history was the mid-17th century, when Dunnottar played a key role in safeguarding the Scottish Regalia (the crown, sceptre and sword) during the civil war against Oliver Cromwell. The Regalia were successfully hidden from Cromwell's army, which saved them from destruction.

Architecture and Significance

Dunnottar Castle is a complex of buildings with a variety of functions, including a keep (donjon), a chapel, residential buildings, kitchens, stables, and prison cells. The castle was the seat of Clan Keith, one of the most influential clans in Scotland.

Present Day

Today Dunnottar Castle is a popular tourist attraction. The castle ruins, set amid stunning landscapes, attract thousands of visitors each year. You can admire both the majestic sea views and the site's rich history. For history and photography enthusiasts, Dunnottar is a must-visit.
