Edzell Castle (English: Edzell Castle) is one of the less obvious but exceptionally charming gems of northern Scotland. Located in the Angus region, about 8 kilometers north of the town of Brechin, it may not be as well known as the formidable Eilean Donan Castle or the majestic Edinburgh Castle, but its atmosphere and rich history will certainly delight any lover of Scottish fortifications.

Edzell Castle was erected in the 16th century by the Lindsay dynasty, one of the most influential Scottish families of that period. It was at the initiative of Sir David Lindsay (9th Earl of Crawford) that the main part of the residence was constructed, and in later years a magnificent walled garden was added. Interestingly, the castle hosted notable figures — in 1562 it was visited by Mary Stuart, known as Mary, Queen of Scots.

Unfortunately, like many Scottish estates, Edzell gradually fell into ruin. In the 18th century the castle passed into the hands of various owners and was eventually abandoned. Nevertheless, picturesque fragments of the buildings have survived to this day, conveying the former grandeur and craftsmanship of the Lindsay family's seat.

The castle's greatest attraction is the famous Renaissance walled garden, that is a garden surrounded by a high wall adorned with numerous reliefs. They depict, among others, the seven liberal arts (so-called seven liberal arts ) and the seven cardinal virtues. These intricately crafted panels give the garden an extraordinary character and make a walk among the greenery a true journey through time.
Besides the rich decoration, you can also admire well-kept flower beds and small ponds here. This perfectly designed garden is a showcase of the artistic vision of the Lindsay family and one of the most beautiful historic gardens in Scotland.
