Castle Fraser – A Magnificent Fortress in the Heart of Aberdeenshire

The castle seen today, however, is largely the result of an ambitious expansion project begun in 1575 by Michael Fraser, the sixth laird of Fraser. Construction continued for several decades and was completed around 1636 by his successors.

Castle Fraser is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of a Scottish Z-plan castle. This distinctive architectural design features a central tower with two additional towers positioned diagonally at opposite corners, providing both defensive strength and residential comfort. The result is a building that successfully combines the appearance of a medieval fortress with the elegance of a noble residence.

For centuries, the castle served as the seat of the Fraser family. Each generation left its mark on the property, adapting it to the tastes and requirements of the time. During the late eighteenth century, Elyza Fraser introduced significant improvements to the estate. A new southern entrance was created, sash windows were installed, and the surrounding grounds were redesigned. Around the same period, the distinctive octagonal stable block was added, becoming one of the estate’s most recognizable features.

The nineteenth century brought further changes to the interior. As a result, visitors today can explore rooms representing different periods in the castle’s history, from the medieval Great Hall to elegant Regency-era interiors. Many original furnishings, family portraits, and historical objects remain on display, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the castle’s former residents.

One of Castle Fraser’s greatest attractions is its remarkable architecture. Turrets, crow-stepped gables, decorative stonework, and massive granite walls give the castle a dramatic and unmistakably Scottish appearance. The view from the round tower is particularly impressive, offering sweeping panoramas of the rolling countryside, forests, and farmland of Aberdeenshire.

The castle also contains a number of intriguing architectural features. Hidden staircases, secret chambers, concealed storage spaces, and the famous “Laird’s Lug” can still be found within its walls. The Laird’s Lug was a small opening that allowed the owner to secretly listen to conversations taking place in the Great Hall, a feature that reflects the practical and sometimes suspicious nature of life in a seventeenth-century Scottish castle.

Like many ancient Scottish castles, Castle Fraser has its share of ghost stories and local legends. The most famous tale is associated with the Green Room. According to local tradition, a tragic event involving a young woman took place there many centuries ago, and her spirit is said to wander the castle to this day. While there is no historical evidence to support the story, it remains one of the most enduring legends connected with the castle.

The Fraser family remained closely associated with the estate for several centuries. This long connection finally came to an end in 1921 when the property was sold by the widow of the last Fraser owner. The castle was purchased by Weetman Pearson, the first Viscount Cowdray. Over the following decades, efforts were made to preserve the historic character of both the castle and its grounds.

In 1976, Castle Fraser came into the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Since then, the organization has worked to protect and maintain this important part of Scotland’s heritage. Today, visitors can explore the historic rooms, discover the story of the Fraser family, and enjoy walks through the beautiful gardens and surrounding estate.
