01 / THE STORY

A castle worth slowing down for.

Law Castle looks almost too complete to have spent decades without a roof. The pale tower rises above West Kilbride, with the Firth of Clyde beyond it. Its neat outline hides a story of a royal marriage that quickly became dangerous.

Historic Environment Scotland dates the tower to around 1468 and says it was probably built for Princess Mary Stewart, daughter of James II, when she married Thomas Boyd. The exact year is uncertain; the familiar wedding-gift story remains a historical attribution.

A marriage caught in a power struggle

Mary's brother, James III, turned against the powerful Boyd family. In 1469 Thomas Boyd was abroad on royal business connected with the king's marriage to Margaret of Denmark. The Boyds lost their titles and lands, and Thomas did not recover his position in Scotland. A tower intended for a princess had become part of a far less romantic story.

From roofless shell to living castle

By the late nineteenth century Law Castle had lost its roof. Restoration began in the late twentieth century and was completed in 2005. Its stone stair and vaulted rooms remain part of a home again, while the roofline and comfortable interiors also reflect the modern rescue of the building. Historic Environment Scotland lists the castle at Category A.

A princess's tower

The tower is traditionally associated with Princess Mary's marriage to Thomas Boyd. The royal connection explains why this modest tower has a story larger than its footprint.

1469

The Boyd reversal

The Boyd family falls from royal favour while Thomas is abroad. The family's political collapse came within a few years of the marriage.

2005

A second life

A long restoration returns the roofless tower to residential use. The apparently complete castle had stood roofless before its modern restoration.
