A familiar doorway can be the beginning of a different journey. These six places in the CastleScotland collection were used to bring Outlander to the screen. Come for Castle Leoch or Lallybroch, then look beyond the fictional names to the buildings and landscapes themselves.
The screen notes identify settings without retelling major plot turns. A castle may provide only part of a scene; visiting it does not mean every room or screen interior is accessible.

The real geography.
The map shows filming locations, not the fictional places they portray. Choose a marker or a name to read about the castle.
Doune stands in for Castle Leoch, the MacKenzie stronghold in the story. Its courtyard and imposing stonework make this a natural starting point for the collection.
The real castle is associated with Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany. Its connection with that powerful medieval household is separate from the fictional MacKenzie setting.
Midhope provides the recognisable exterior of Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family home. The approach and steps are the focus of a visit inspired by the series.
Plan around the exterior and grounds. Check the operator’s current admission and access notices; a filming location does not guarantee access to screen interiors.
Blackness represents Fort William in the series. The screen name does not mean this castle is in the Highland town: the real location is on the Firth of Forth.
Built as a fifteenth-century residence for the Crichtons, Blackness developed into a heavily fortified stronghold. Its military character extends well beyond its screen role.
Parts of Linlithgow Palace were used for Wentworth Prison scenes. Think of it as one filming location within the screen setting, rather than a complete prison set.
The real building is a royal palace and the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. Its open courtyard and ruined royal apartments tell a very different story.
Craigmillar’s medieval walls also belong to the real story of Mary, Queen of Scots, who stayed here. Explore it as a historic residence as well as a screen location.
Aberdour was used for the abbey scenes associated with Jamie’s recovery in the first season. The castle’s screen role should not be confused with its real function.
