Angus runs from the fertile country around Dundee towards the long glens beneath the Grampians. The current CastleScotland atlas is deliberately compact here, but its three guides cover strikingly different forms of Scottish castle building: an evolving aristocratic seat, a refined Renaissance ruin and a compact urban tower house.

Glamis grew through centuries of royal and family association, producing the layered silhouette visitors see today. Edzell is quieter but architecturally precise, especially where its house and symbolic garden meet. Claypotts compresses late-16th-century tower-house design into a memorable form near Dundee. Together they make a useful introduction to how status, comfort and defence could be expressed in very different ways.
