Glamis Castle is one of the most famous and most beautiful castles in Scotland.Located in Angus,around 12 miles north of Dundee,it is known for its fairytale appearance,royal connections,long family history and many legends that have grown around it over the centuries.

The most important moment in the recorded history of Glamis came in 1372,when Sir John Lyon was granted the Thanage of Glamis by King Robert II of Scotland.A few years later,John Lyon married Princess Johanna Stewart,the king’s daughter.This established the Lyon family connection with Glamis,a connection that has continued for more than six hundred years.

Princess Margaret,the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II,was born at Glamis Castle on 21 August 1930.This gives the castle a special place in modern royal history.

Queen Elizabeth II also visited Glamis during her younger years,and the castle remained closely connected with the wider Royal Family through the Bowes Lyon line.These royal associations have helped make Glamis one of Scotland’s most celebrated historic homes.

Janet Douglas and the Grey Lady

One of the most famous stories connected with Glamis Castle is the tragic story of Janet Douglas,Lady Glamis.She was a member of the powerful Douglas family,and during the reign of King James V she became caught up in dangerous political tensions.

Janet was accused of plotting against the king.After a deeply questionable trial,she was executed in Edinburgh in 1537.Her death is often remembered as one of the darker episodes of Scottish noble history,and many later retellings have turned her story into a legend of injustice,persecution and haunting.

According to tradition,her spirit returned to Glamis Castle and became known as the Grey Lady.She is said to haunt the castle chapel,and one seat in the chapel is traditionally left empty for her.Whether one believes the story or not,it remains one of the most enduring legends associated with Glamis.
