01 / THE STORY
A castle worth slowing down for.
Glamis looks as though someone kept adding another turret whenever the story needed one. Seen across the lawns, its busy skyline promises secret rooms, royal visitors and rather more than an ordinary country-house tour.
Some of those stories are documented. Others belong firmly to folklore. Both have helped make Glamis a place people remember—but it is worth knowing which kind of tale you are hearing.
Why choose Glamis?
Come for a furnished castle, family stories and gardens rather than an empty ruin. The appeal lies in moving from that theatrical exterior into rooms that were used, furnished and changed across generations.
Give the gardens their own share of the day. The castle looks different once you step away from the entrance and let the parkland frame it.
A childhood home with a royal future
Glamis was the childhood home of Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Her younger daughter, Princess Margaret, was born here in 1930.
Those connections bring the story closer to our own time. Behind the formal portraits is a family place where children spent holidays and grew up. It is a gentler counterpoint to the castle’s reputation for secrets.
The room nobody could find — a legend
One persistent Glamis story tells of a hidden room and a family secret passed between generations. In a familiar version, guests tried to locate an inaccessible chamber by hanging cloths from the windows of the rooms they could enter, then looking for a window left bare.
It is an excellent mystery-story device, but it does not prove that a secret prisoner or the so-called Monster of Glamis existed. The accounts grew and changed through retelling.
Enjoy the puzzle as folklore. The building has enough corners to set the imagination working without treating rumours about a hidden family member as fact.
