Curated castle guide

Free ruins and rewarding viewpoints

Open the interactive map →

Some of Scotland's most memorable castle encounters happen outdoors: a ruin beside a loch, a tower above the sea or a viewpoint reached on foot. These choices work well for flexible and lower-cost itineraries.

Important: Free exterior access or a public viewpoint rather than entry to an interior. Conditions, parking charges and temporary conservation closures can change.

Each guide explains what you can expect on location. Castle Stalker and Dunbar are primarily viewpoint experiences, while other entries are open ruins or landscape stops.

Visit responsibly

Stay on established paths, respect livestock and private property, keep away from unstable masonry and never climb historic walls. Remote sites may have no facilities, so plan for weather, footwear and daylight.
