Three Scotland Castle Weekend Routes

Open the interactive map →

A good castle weekend is about rhythm, not collecting the highest possible number of stops. These three routes combine major sites with smaller places and keep the geography realistic.

Before you go: opening days, tour access and seasonal hours change. Confirm every staffed attraction directly and treat driving times as a minimum.

Route one: Edinburgh and East Lothian

Day one: Edinburgh Castle and Craigmillar. Day two: Dirleton, Tantallon and a coastal stop at Dunbar.

Route two: Aberdeenshire tower houses

Base yourself near Aberdeen. Pair Crathes and Drum on the first day, then continue to Fyvie and the coast.

Route three: Loch Awe and the western Highlands

Start with Kilchurn and continue north through the dramatic landscapes around Castle Stalker, Dunstaffnage and Fort William.

Adjust the route

Use the interactive map to replace a stop, shorten a day or continue into another region. In poor weather, prioritise staffed castles with interiors and keep exposed ruins for a clearer forecast.
