Greenknowe Tower – A Hidden Renaissance Tower in the Scottish Borders

Greenknowe Tower is one of those hidden places that deserves far more attention than it gets. Tucked away near the village of Gordon in the Scottish Borders,it isn’t one of Scotland’s famous castles,but it is one of the country’s best-preserved tower houses. If you want to see what a fortified Scottish home looked like at the end of the 16th century,this is one of the best places to visit.

The tower was completed in 1581 by James Seton of Touch,a member of the influential Seton family. However,the site itself has an even older history,and its position was carefully chosen. Greenknowe stands on a small grassy mound that was once surrounded by marshland,creating a natural defensive barrier long before stone walls or gun loops were added.

Unlike the large royal castles built for kings and armies,Greenknowe was designed as both a family home and a fortress. It follows the classic L-plan layout that became popular in Scotland during the late 1500s,combining comfortable living quarters with impressive defensive features.

One of the most remarkable details is the original iron yett protecting the entrance. These heavy iron gates were far stronger than wooden doors and are now extremely rare. The tower also features corner turrets,gun loops and a spiral staircase designed so that right-handed defenders had the advantage during an attack. Even small architectural details were carefully planned to make the building as difficult to capture as possible.

During the 17th century,the tower passed into the hands of the Pringle family. As life along the Scottish Borders became more peaceful,some of the windows were enlarged to let in more light,showing how the building gradually changed from a defensive stronghold into a more comfortable home.

One of the reasons Greenknowe Tower is so special today is its remarkable state of preservation. Although the roof has disappeared,much of the original stonework is still standing,and many of the castle’s defensive features can still be seen exactly as they were designed more than 440 years ago.

Greenknowe Tower may not appear on every visitor’s itinerary,but that’s exactly what makes it worth discovering. It offers an authentic look at Renaissance Scotland and is a perfect stop for anyone exploring the castles of the Scottish Borders.
