Forth, crags & lowlands01 / THE REGION
The upper Forth is one of Scotland's decisive landscapes. River crossings, steep volcanic ground and routes between Highlands and Lowlands concentrated military and royal attention around Stirling. The castles in this editorial region are not numerous, but each occupies a place with a clear strategic or political purpose.
Stirling Castle dominates the sequence, combining fortress, royal palace and national viewpoint. Doune offers a remarkably complete late-medieval courtyard castle; Clackmannan Tower watches the lower ground towards the Forth; Castle Campbell withdraws into the dramatic setting above Dollar. Together they explain why central Scotland cannot be understood simply as the space between Edinburgh and the Highlands.
