Sea lochs, islands & glens01 / THE REGION
Argyll is a maritime region even when the road runs inland. Sea lochs cut deep into the landscape, and islands, headlands and narrow crossings once connected communities more effectively than overland travel. Its castles make sense when read from the water: they guard approaches, mark clan territory and occupy places where movement could be watched.
Kilchurn frames Loch Awe with one of Scotland's most recognisable ruins. Dunstaffnage and Dunollie control approaches near Oban, while Castle Stalker turns a small tidal island into a precise defensive position. Achallader is the quieter inland counterpoint, embedded in Glen Orchy. These sites reward attention to tide, weather and approach as much as to masonry.
