Dumfries and Galloway fills Scotland's south-western corner, between the hills of Annandale, the Solway Firth and the wilder landscapes of Galloway. It is a territory shaped by border families, medieval conflict and natural routes leading north from England. Its castles do not form one monumental trail. They sit apart, and each reveals a different layer of the region's story.

Caerlaverock is the great visual set-piece: a triangular fortress held inside a broad moat. Threave adds a walk and a seasonal boat crossing, turning the approach into part of the visit. Lochwood is their quiet counterpoint—an austere Johnstone ruin embedded in the Annandale landscape. Together they make a strong case for travelling slowly, leaving room for minor roads and changing weather.
