01 / THE REGION

Distance becomes part
of the story.

The Highlands form CastleScotland's broadest travel region, stretching from the Great Glen and the west-coast sea lochs to Skye, Caithness and the far north. Journeys are longer here, and the setting often explains the castle as clearly as its surviving walls. Narrow crossings, islands, harbours and routes through the glens determined where power could be held and how it could be defended.

Eilean Donan and Urquhart are the familiar landmarks, but the regional atlas also reaches Dunvegan, Dunrobin, Ardvreck, Old Inverlochy and quieter coastal ruins. Together they reveal several Highlands rather than one: clan territories, royal interventions, estate landscapes and communities shaped by the sea. Leave room between stops—the road, weather and changing light are part of the visit.
